i have never received any formal training to speak of aside from a color/composition class and a basic drawing class many years ago.Īs far as references I have, I have recently purchased Drawing Lessons From the Great Masters and Anatomy Lessons from the Great Masters by Hale, I also have the Charles Bargue Drawing Course, and I have downloaded copies of Loomis books on drawing heads, Proportion and Perspective plus a few others.

I figure I am looking for direction on how to approach figure drawing and wanting to study anatomy and technique. When I look at a life model or even one of the life drawing websites, I have a real struggle to get things down accurately or even knowing where to start within the time frame. I have nothing against working for properly taken photos but it is a fairly lengthy process. What I have done and what you have probably seen here on WC is arranged lighting and models for photos, then draw/paint from those photos. I want to be able to beautifully and accurately render figures from life. I could start a thread and expand on these elements if people want. There are many talented teachers out there now that were not available when I started out. This is not the definite list there are more advanced abstract ideas that can be researched as an example like “Inner movement curves” etc. If you have no sound teachers then take charge of your own learning explore and research each idea and if you can master each of these elements you will do very well you can make your learning as complex as you want. You will be juggling several elements at once its the focus on one particular element at a time that is important. These elements happen simultaneously its much easier if you isolate them and skill build around each element adding another one as you build confidence. I realize some posters reading this are already highly skilled you can still use it to recognize your weak areas and rectify them. Then there are the umbrella concepts like Accuracy, Composition and Design.
